Jani Ruscica: Parallel Acts 29.1.–11.4.2010
29 Jan – 11 Apr 2010
Turku Art Museum is proud to present Jani Ruscica’s  exhibition Parallel Acts in museum’s Studio.
The core of the exhibition consists of a film Beginning an Ending (2009, 17 min.) where seven persons reveal their thoughts about the future. Ruscica’s (b. 1978) previous work Evolutions (2008) was awarded the First Prize for films under 60 minutes in Cologne’s KunstFilm biennale in 2008. In Evolutions seven young amateur actors conveyed their ideas about the origin of the universe and their relation to it. Now premiered Beginning an Ending has a similar structure and in the work Ruscica continues his research on questions around universe, life and society.

Different conceptions about the future are strongly shaped by the notions about our past. Similarly these notions are shaped by the warnings of imminent catastrophe which are mediated by the media and popular culture alike. Beginning an Ending was filmed in a stage-like setting in a studio using digital and virtual image-making techniques. In addition to Beginning an Ending the installations Scenography I and II are on show. These works consist of Chroma-Key green and blue screens which are used when making virtual backgrounds to films. The patterns sewn into the displayed screens refer to the stage designs used by such 20th century Italian Futurists as Enrico Prampolini (1894–1956).

Jani Ruscica’s works testify of the talents of several people. Beginning an Ending was filmed by Anu Keršnen and the script was completed by Ruscica and the amateur actors appearing in the film. Scenography I and II were executed by Varpu Eršpuu. Ruscica’s approach to different beliefs and world views is always respectful. For him, recollecting one’s impressions of the future is at the same a way to process one’s fears and dreams. Our notions of the unknown and uncertain future mirror the uncertainty of everyday. For Ruscica Beginning an Ending is ultimately an image or our time and its events.
