Riina Palmqvist: Judgment Day
22 Mar – 28 Apr 2013
Every year, a graduate from the Turku Arts Academy is invited to hold a degree show in the Studio gallery at Turku Art Museum. In spring 2013, the invited graduating artist is Riina Palmqvist (b. 1985).

Palmqvist’s work has its roots in performative and bodily video art which she combines with installation. Judgment Day consists of six video works and an installation that takes over the entire Studio gallery. The show gives us a glimpse into the mind of a person groping their way in the world. The visions conjured up by Palmqvist play with horror, yet the commonplace style of presentation brings the whole closer to our everyday experience. Faced with such doomsday visions, even a smile is possible.

Judgment Day depicts an individual’s struggles with depression, shame, grief, loneliness, despair, anxiety and boredom. In my work, I try to transform these affects, perceived as negative in our society, into something physical, visible and concrete. Pressures, expectations and patterns of behaviour created by society, and the suppression of negative emotions and thoughts behind roles and façades, appear in my work in the form of personal frustration, alienation and sense of meaninglessness. On Judgment Day, at the end of time, we come face to face with our true selves, stripped of all roles. My works evoke simultaneously the desolation and conventionality of everyday life and its comical aspects.” –Riina Palmqvist
